AUCKLAND
Auckland is the hardest trade market in the country to get found in, and the easiest to waste money on. The reason is the same for both: it's far too big to compete for city-wide searches, and almost nobody builds for that properly.

Auckland isn't one market, it's a dozen. A sparkie in Papakura and a sparkie in Takapuna are not competing with each other and never will be, but a website targeting 'electrician Auckland' pretends they are — and loses to the big operators with the budget to win it. The whole game here is suburb-level relevance, because that's the search that actually converts and the one your competitors are ignoring.
Aucklanders search with a suburb attached far more than anywhere else in New Zealand, because everyone knows the city is too spread out to do otherwise. Nobody wants a tradie coming from Albany to Manurewa. That means 'builder Mt Eden' and 'plumber Howick' are the queries with intent behind them, and 'builder Auckland' is mostly noise you'll never rank for anyway.
Auckland traffic means a job across town can lose you half a day. Being explicit about the zones you actually cover filters out enquiries you'd have turned down, and reassures the ones nearby that you'll turn up on time.
Townhouse and infill development has reshaped what residential trades are asked for. If your business does that work, that's a page's worth of searches most competitors haven't claimed.
Central and inner-western suburbs are full of pre-war housing with borer, piles, knob-and-tube wiring and roofing well past its life. Specialist knowledge of those is worth saying out loud — it's the difference between a quote and a trusted quote.
The leaky building era hit Auckland harder than anywhere. Homeowners here screen harder because of it, and a website that addresses workmanship and warranties directly does better than one that talks about passion.
Your build includes suburb and service-area targeting. For a Auckland business that usually means some combination of:
We pick the ones you actually service on the kickoff call. Fewer real areas beats a long list of thin pages — Google spots padded location pages, and so do customers.
Honestly, probably not, and chasing it is how Auckland tradies waste money. Those city-wide terms are held by large operators with budgets to match, and even when you rank the traffic converts badly because half of it is the wrong side of the city. Suburb and area pages are cheaper to win, convert far better, and add up to more work than the one term you were fighting for.
The ones you'll genuinely drive to, and no more. Five or six real service areas beats twenty thin pages — Google spots padded location pages easily and it looks desperate to a customer who notices you claim to cover Warkworth to Pukekohe. We work out your actual zone on the kickoff call.
The local targeting above sits on top of a site written for what you actually do:
